What is yoga?
When we think of Yoga in modern American society, we think of poses, like Down Dog, Warrior, and other complex postures. But Yoga is more than just the poses we are familiar with. Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India over 4000 years ago. In Sanskrit, Yoga literally translates to “to yoke”, or in other words, to join or to connect. The practice of yoga emphasizes the connection (yoking) of the body, mind, and spirit, to improve inner balance and clarity with an emphasis on breath focus. The foundation of Yoga is breathing, and the purpose is to create a connection between the body and the mind, using breath as the conduit. The postures we are familiar with are used only to challenge the body to maintain good mental focus and steady breathing.
What is yoga for Equestrians?
Yoga for Equestrians is just that! Yoga, but focuses on the specific physical and mental needs of the equestrian. This sport is physically and mentally demanding. Yoga can help equestrians at any level in any discipline, because no matter what you do when you ride, the same basic principles are present - mental presence, physical strength, and overall stability and balance. Yoga for Equestrians helps equestrians by providing tools to maintain mental and emotional presence, and self-awareness through meditation and connection exercises, as well as targets the specific muscles and coordination needed to ride effectively.
